Statement from Shaldon Parish Council :-
Some bad news.
Shaldon Parish Councillors have taken the very difficult decision to cancel the 2026 Bonfire and Fireworks which were due to take place on 31st October.
As we said last month, the event going ahead was always conditional on the road closure in place on Marine Parade being temporarily lifted by Devon County Council for the weekend of the event, as this is the main route to the bonfire from the Ness car parks and is also a key evacuation route in case of emergency. Discussions have continued with DCC, and as a result of these, Parish Councillors now do not believe that there is sufficient certainty that the closure will be lifted on 31st October to allow the necessary preparations for the bonfire to take place. Many days of work are carried out by the volunteer bonfire build team in the weeks leading up to the event, and this, along with the significant expense incurred in storing and moving the large number of pallets required for the bonfire during this time, led Councillors to believe it would be best to cancel the event now, and so ensure that as much notice as possible is given to all in the village, including our hospitality businesses, and to those considering visiting Shaldon.
We are deeply sorry for the disappointment that the cancellation will cause, especially to all those families who were looking forward to our traditional Bonfire Night celebration. This huge disappointment is shared by our volunteer Councillors who have spent many days throughout 2026 preparing for the Shaldon Bonfire and Fireworks – an event we love. However Shaldon Parish Council appreciates that the cliff stabilisation work being carried out by DCC above Marine Parade is important and necessary and, as the safety of everyone in Shaldon is of course our main priority, are glad that this vital work is now being done.

Come and enjoy a wonderful firework display. There are stalls with soup, burgers and goodies. This is a great free family event, fun for everyone. The actual date each year is determined by the tides. The bonfire on Shaldon Beach is usually lit at 6.30pm and the firework display from The Point begins around 7.15pm.
The theme this year (2026) will be Halloween. Please make guys for the bonfire, and bring them along between 12 and 3 pm.
We would also be very grateful for volunteers to help us build the Bonfire during the day, or in the evening by selling the burgers and collecting the money in buckets that will finance next year’s event. It’s always lots of fun to be part of the Bonfire and Fireworks Team, so please email the Parish Clerk, at clerk@shaldonparishcouncil.gov.uk to volunteer.

Important information from the organisers (assuming it’s the same as previous years) :-
Teignmouth and Shaldon Bonfire and Fireworks – this is going to be a brilliant and very popular event, so to help avoid traffic congestion, please use public transport to travel to us if at all possible. Please note that the Teignmouth to Shaldon Ferry will be running all evening. There is free parking for 3 hours available at Morrisons in Broadmeadow if you do need to use the car, so we would urge you to park there and walk across the Bridge. The Ness car park in Shaldon will be open but we anticipate that it will fill up quickly and will then be closed to additional cars.
Please remember that, to keep everyone safe at this very popular family event and to ensure access for emergency vehicles, there will be extensive road closures in place around the centre of Shaldon from 4pm to approximately 8.30/9pm. Manned road blocks will be in place at the junctions of Riverside with Bridge Road and Fore Street with Bridge Road. Horse Lane will be closed from Marine Parade to Broadlands. Marine Parade and The Strand will be traffic free from 4pm and a ‘no parking’ restriction will be in force. We apologise for any inconvenience caused to local residents and suggest that residents speak to the marshals manning the road blocks on the day if they have any questions. The marshals will of course endeavour to help residents who need access to their houses as much as possible, but everyone’s safety must be their primary concern.
Pets
Please be aware that the fireworks will be set off for approximately 10/15 minutes starting at 7.15pm and take any measures necessary to keep your pets indoors and safe during that time.
