On the Water

The Teign Estuary at Shaldon – Devon is a delightful place for sailing, rowing, canoeing, power boating, fishing and lots more water borne activities. There are many clubs which encourage both beginners and experienced members
All the clubs have an active social calendar too.

The first port of call for anyone who wishes to become involved with activities on the estuary should be the Teignmouth Harbour Commission. It provides information on everything you need to know in order to enjoy the waters around Shaldon and out to sea safely.

Teignmouth Harbour Commission

Teignmouth is an historical Harbour, which has been a trading port for over three hundred years, and was a major centre for crews and ships for the Newfoundland fisheries.

The THC provides information, guidance and contacts for all users of the harbour, especially for visiting yachtsmen and boat owners, who wish to experience and enjoy this beautiful estuary.

It also manages several hundred moorings on the estuary and application forms and costs can be obtained from THC.

The Teign Estuary has long since had a good reputation for huge flounder and the National Flounder Championships [Shore] are held here each year around November, as organised by the Teignmouth SAS whose HQ is on the Back beach next to the Ferry Crossing. This is not an exhaustive list of all the water sports and activities in and around Shaldon but gives a flavour of how important the estuary is to this area for leisure and livelihood.
